Sola Abulu facilitates Crisis Management Session at NAPE Nigeria Pre-Conference Short Course

November 12, 2023: Sola Abulu, Principal Consultant/Founder of Sola Abulu Associates (SA&A) facilitated a crisis management session at the recently concluded Short Course ahead of the 41st Annual Conference of the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE). The Short course was the 1st of its kind in the Nigerian energy industry focused on energy communications. The course was an initiative of NAPE Nigeria and Tunbosun Afolayan of Pro Ally – a communications firm focused on democratizing knowledge and communication in the energy industry.

Sola’s session focused on understanding the difference between issues and crisis management, understanding how to respond in times of crisis and knowing what a best practise crisis management structure looks like and how to implement it.

The session was attended by business leaders, geologists, HR practitioners, organizational leaders and communications practitioners and consultants.

According to Sola Abulu:

One of the greatest mistakes in crisis management is to respond to a crisis as though it is an issue and try to manage through steady-state operations. A bonafide crisis is one that threatens your reputation, license-to-operate and relationship with stakeholders. Once any or all of those three is impacted, it requires a strict governance, coordination and leadership process headed by the CEO of the company and supported by a strong business leader and a communications expert. It is important to frame the nature of the problem from the perspective of the external world and seek to mitigate and manage response in a coordinated and externally intuitive manner, keeping long-term reputation in mind.”
